In the United States, the S-Class suffered a 51.5% year-over-year decline in August; CL-Class volume slid 57.8%. Canadian sales figures for the two cars - soon to be one car under the W222 S-Class banner - are combined. BMW sold 52 7-Series sedans in August, up 13%. Jaguar XJ volume rose 150% to 30 units. Lexus LS volume rose, albeit by just two units, as was the case with the Audi A8. The S-Class's lull between generations produces lackluster sales, but we can expect to see a big boost soon. Its decline certainly wasn't the worst in August. Sales of the rarely available Honda Insight fell to just one unit, and the Chevrolet Orlando, still relatively fresh, slid 86%. The Jaguar XK has been cast aside to the shadows by Jaguar's F-Type, and we've yet to see the new Chevrolet Impala put up a decent month. Its Buick partner tumbled at the exact same rate in August, as well. GoodCarBadCar ranks worst sellers three different ways below. It starts by measuring vehicles by their own respective year-over-year declines. Then cars with base prices under $50,000 are ranked by volume, then all nameplates are tossed into one pot. You can always select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both Canada and the United States. Vehicle must have been on sale in August 2013, must not have been officially cancelled by its manufacturer, and must have been showcased on manufacturer's website in June. The rule that disallows discontinued or cancelled vehicles can lead to confusion, as manufacturers often announce the discontinuation of a model but continue to market the car indefinitely. Brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Maserati etc. do not issue model-specific monthly sales reports. Audi's A3 is on hiatus, but sales fell 91% to 10 in August. The Lexus RX is Canada's top-selling premium brand utility vehicle. Its lead over the Audi Q5 is narrow, however, at just 243 units. The RX is available as a $46,150 RX350 or a $62,300 RX450h (excluding options and packages). The Audi Q5's base price is $40,900, and beyond being available as a hybrid, the Q5 can also be kitted out with a V6 in two different states of tune. The SQ5, with a supercharged 3.0L V6, starts at $57,000.
Not privy to transaction price data, we do know that, among vehicles with base prices above $50,000, BMW sold 678 in August 2013 and Mercedes-Benz sold 1032. Acura's lone remaining vehicle with a $50K+ base price - the RLX and MDX start at $49,990 - has been cancelled. ZDX sales in August totalled three. Three units. Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. Canada's favourite luxury vehicles in August 2013 are listed below. July 2013 - August 2012
Red font indicates year-over-year declining sales * A4 sales include sales of the unreported Allroad $50,000 CDN (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this new system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, $50K seemed like a safe place to begin - it equals the average U.S. new car transaction price plus $15,000, plus another $5000 to account for Canadian increases. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of this list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $35,900, as would be the case with the BMW 320i, which costs less than a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T Limited. The biggest problem with a $50,000 minimum price of entry? Cars like the Cadillac XTS, which starts at $48,995, sporty cars like the $48,600 Audi TT, and SUVs like the $49,930 Chevrolet Tahoe, $49,990 Acura MDX, and $49,675 Volkswagen Touareg.
