    image General Motors is shutting the Chevrolet Volt factory for five weeks because of excess inventory. That comes after a prolonged shutdown over the Christmas holiday.

    Interestingly, both involve General Motors' tech fund, GM Ventures.
    -- The upside: Startup battery maker Envia Systems claimed a breakthrough last month, saying it can seriously boost the energy density of lithium ion batteries. The Newark, Calif., company says it will be able to cut by half the cost of a battery pack for a 300-mile range EV. GM Ventures invested $7 million in Envia in January 2011.

    Peter Horbury watches for China's unique style cues
    image Former Volvo design boss Peter Horbury is thinking hard about the future look of cars from China's Geely Group -- and he has a few ideas already.
    The Englishman was named Geely Group senior vice president of design last October. When asked about his styling plans for future Geely models, Horbury said he would like to bring in elements that are unique to China.
