| LOS ANGELES -- After two years marred by natural disasters and recalls, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. appears to have regained its momentum. Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. ended 2012 with December sales increasing 9 percent. Toyota's total of 2.08 million vehicles sold for the year was up 27 percent over 2011 results, which were hurt by the Japanese earthquake. Still, it was a boost of more than 400,000 units over the previous year and exceeded Toyota's internal forecasts. "With sales nearly doubling the increase of a healthy industry, Toyota had a breakout year in 2012," CEO Jim Lentz said. "We expect to outperform the industry once again [in 2013] with another nine product launches on the horizon." Toyota is projecting the industry will hit 14.7 million sales in 2013. But that forecast was made 90 days ago and may be updated after a strong fourth quarter, Lentz said. Also likely to be revised: Toyota's internal sales target of 2.15 million units for next year, a modest gain of 100,000 vehicles. The strong December results helped American Honda's full-year 2012 sales rise 24 percent to 1.42 million vehicles from 2011, when deliveries were hurt by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Honda Division's December sales jumped 27 percent, just 500 units shy of its best December ever. From a market share perspective, the Honda brand is back on track. Its 2012 share of 8.7 percent is its best since 2008, when it held a 9.7-percent share of U.S. light-vehicle sales. In 2011, the Honda brand's ... story Pickup push drives GM to 5% increase DETROIT -- General Motors' best month for pickup sales in four years helped slash the company's bloated truck inventory and propelled GM to a 5 percent sales gain for December. But that 5 percent gain, to 245,733 vehicles, trailed the industry's 9 percent increase. All four GM brands posted increases. Cadillac rose 12 percent; Buick was up 10 percent; GMC increased 5 percent; and Chevy rose 4 percent. For the year, GM's sales rose 4 percent to 2,595,717 units, well below the industry's 13 percent growth. In 2012, Chevrolet and GMC sales each rose 4 percent, Buick sales increased 2 percent, and Cadillac sales fell 2 percent.
