| | | PHOTO GALLERY Bentley GTC The GTC continues to be powered by 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine producing 567 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The car gets a wider track, with sharper steering and a retuned suspension. Additionally, the all-wheel-drive system has been reworked with a 40:60 front-rear bias, as opposed to last year's 50:50 split. Bentley says this will reduce understeer during hard cornering. >> Photo Gallery |

The Viaggio (Italian for "journey") is a reworked version of the Dart, which is based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The Viaggio has different front and rear ends from the Dart and smaller headlights, separated from a sleeker, smaller grille. In the Dart, bigger headlights extend into a much taller grille. >> Photo Gallery | | | KEITH CRAIN Brake-throttle override? This is nuts The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is proposing a mandate for a system that would enable a driver to override the throttle in the event of unintended acceleration. NHTSA says such a system could be added without much cost or difficulty because most 2012 model vehicles already will have brake-throttle overrides. But it still likely would cost American consumers millions of dollars. NHTSA has said more than 100 people have been killed by unintended acceleration, but to the best of my knowledge, there have been few cases in which a flaw in the vehicle -- not driver error -- was proved to have ... >> Read the column Published: Apr 23 12:01 am U.S. Eastern time
| JAMES B. TREECE Voluntary export restraints are back; they didn't work the last time Remember the so-called voluntary export restraints? They're back, but with new players. And once again, U.S. and other automakers and suppliers should ponder what unintended consequences will arise. The United States negotiated a -- ahem -- voluntary agreement with Japan as a way to hold down exports from Japan in the late 1970s and during most of the 1980s. The agreement may have held down Japanese market-share gains temporarily, but it was hardly a successful barrier to Japanese cars here. The consequences -- mostly unintended -- were a rise in exports of higher-priced Japanese vehicles to the United States ... >> Read the column Published: Apr 23 12:01 am U.S. Eastern time
| BRADFORD WERNLE Fusion wagon? In Europe, yes, but not here A reader wrote us a hopeful note last week, saying he recently had spotted what appeared to be a station wagon version of the 2013 Ford Fusion being driven in suburban Detroit. He wondered whether Ford would sell a wagon version of the Fusion in America. The answer is a firm "No." What the reader probably saw was a prototype of the Mondeo, the European version of the Fusion. Under CEO Alan Mulally's One Ford global product development system, much of the development work on the Mondeo and the Fusion has taken place on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. The Fusion goes on sale this summer, and the ... >> Read the column Published: Apr 23 12:01 am U.S. Eastern time
