Large Luxury SUV Sales Figures In Canada - July 2013 YTD

GOOD CAR BAD CAR

2013 Lincoln Navigator interior
Lincoln's Navigator continued its downward Canadian sales trend in July 2013. For the fifth consecutive month, Navigator sales declined sharply.

Ford Canada sold 1102 Navigators in 2004 before sales fell in three consecutive years, after which Navigator improved in three consecutive years, after which Navigator volume slid 10% last year. Lincoln is on pace for fewer than 300 Navigator sales in 2013. Mercedes-Benz has already sold 1380 copies of the company's GL-Class.

More pertinently, Cadillac promises another radical Escalade for next year. Lincoln has been overshadowed by Cadillac's big SUV for years. Ford has promised big things for the Lincoln brand, but will a redesigned Navigator be part of the plans?

Dreadfully ugly though the MKT may be, it's been selling more often than the Navigator this year. (It trailed the Navigator by 132 units at this time last year.) 57% of Lincoln's volume comes from the Edge-based MKX.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The Next Benz S
Canadian sales of the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ, and Lexus LS shot through the roof in July 2013, propelling the four cars to a collective total of 111 units, up 68% from 66 units in July 2013.

Predictably, sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class are dying down as customers already know all about the next S-Class. For the seventh time in seven months, Canadian Porsche Panamera volume has fallen on a year-over-year basis.

Year-to-date, the S-Class and its CL-Class coupe sibling lead the BMW 6-Series (sedan, coupe, and convertible) by 24 units. In theory, the 7-Series is a more direct S-Class rival. But as you've guessed, direct rivals aren't so direct in this hi-lux stratosphere.

You'll notice we've included the Audi A7 in the "large" lux category this month, while still including it with its sibling, the A6, in the midsize category. We'd also like to include the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, but Canadian sales figures include the CLS with the E-Class. While the two cars aren't necessarily the most conventional rivals for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, they're certainly pricey enough to enter into the conversation.

In the U.S., 11% of total E-Class/CLS-Class sales are generated by the CLS. If that figure held true in Canada, Canadian CLS volume would have totalled approximately 192 units in the first seven months of 2013.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the BMW 6-Series here as well as with sporty cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not made available in Canada. Tesla doesn't release a monthly Model S sales report, either, but we do know that Tesla sold 342 copies of the Model S in the first six months of 2013. ANDC April estimates for Ferrari and Lamborghini were 18 and 4, respectively in July. Total Maserati and Bentley volume is reported, but not by specific models.

2014 Kia Cadenza
This Week's Test Car At GCBC
Towers, The Kia Cadenza
Canadians hardly bought any full-size, volume brand sedans in July 2013. Hardly any.

The nine cars you see here compiled only 1140 sales in total last month, equal to just 0.7% of the overall new vehicle market. The Honda Civic outsold this whole category of vehicle by more than five-to-one.

In the United States, this vehicle subset - including the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and Azera - outsold the Civic by 15,218 units while generating 3.6% of the overall auto industry's volume.

Through seven months, Canadian sales of the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Genesis sedan, and Nissan Maxima have tumbled. In July, the LaCrosse, Impala, 300, Taurus, and Genesis all reported declines. In four months, Kia Canada has sold just 62 copies of GCBC's current tester, the Cadenza.

It doesn't matter that these cars are wonderful places to spend time; that a jaunt from Moncton to Moose Jaw would be more comfortable in a Cadenza than it would be in a Forte.

Canadians simply aren't going to spend this kind of money on cars that don't wear premium badges, and they may not spend this kind of money on cars at all. For the price of a top-end, un-optioned 2014 Impala, an Audi Q5 is probably more in line with current market desires.

Genesis refers only to the sedan, not the coupe.
