Canada best-selling vehicles market share chart June 2013
Click Chart For Larger View
June 2013 lists for Canada's 20 best-selling cars, 20-best-selling SUVs and crossovers, 13 best-selling trucks (which is all of them) and the ten minivans still available have already been published.

This is where you'll find it all wrapped up together: the 30 best-selling vehicles overall in June 2013.

Trucks take the top two spots; and grab two of the other top eight slots, as well. Passenger cars, meanwhile, account for 14 of the 30 top sellers. There is but one minivan in the top 30 - minivan sales were down 13% in June 2013. There remains enough space for eleven utility vehicles, from the seventh-ranked Ford Escape through to the 29th-ranked Mazda CX-5.

Among June's 30 most popular vehicles in Canada, none improved at a greater rate than Honda's Accord, which is up by 162% this year and rose 162% in June. The Accord generated 1023 extra sales for Honda Canada's dealers in June; 5578 extra in the first half of 2013.

On the flip side, the Dodge Grand Caravan's 30% slide was unmatched by any of the other nine declining nameplates. Grand Caravan volume was down by 1835 units in June; by 4325 units year-to-date.

Compared with May's results, missing vehicles include the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Rio, and Kia Forte. The Korean trio was replaced by the Chrysler 200, Nissan Rogue, and the Kia Sorento.

You can always select a make and model at GCBC's Sales Stats page to find historical monthly and yearly sales figures from both Canada and the United States. Pertinent links are clickable at the bottom of this post, but you can also find related links at the Best Sellers page. Below, the 30 best-selling vehicles in Canada from June 2013.

2013 BMW X1
Canada luxury auto brand market share chart June 2013
Click Chart For Larger View
For the first time since July of last year, BMW Canada reported a year-over-year X1 sales increase.

June 2013 also marked the first time in a while that Mercedes-Benz reported a year-over-year GL-Class sales increase. That hadn't happened since November.

At opposite ends of the German crossover spectrum, the X1 and GL-Class were both relatively popular in June 2013. The X1 ranked sixth among premium brand vehicles; the GL ranked seventh among vehicles priced above $50,000.

Although BMW 3-Series sales fell 5% in June, Canada's best-selling luxury car expanded its lead over the Mercedes-Benz C-Class to 1371 units with half of 2013 remaining. Among luxury-brand utilities, the Lexus RX is now just 99 units ahead of the BMW X3.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. Canada's favourite luxury vehicles in June 2013 are listed below.

$50,000 CDN (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this new system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, $50K seemed like a safe place to begin - it equals the average U.S. new car transaction price plus $15,000, plus another $5000 to account for Canadian increases. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of this list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $35,900, as would be the case with the BMW 320i, which costs less than a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T Limited. The biggest problem with a $50,000 minimum price of entry? Cars like the Cadillac XTS, which starts at $48,995, sporty cars like the $48,600 Audi TT, and SUVs like the $49,930 Chevrolet Tahoe and $49,675 Volkswagen Touareg.
* With the new Acura MDX, set to arrive in July, Acura Canada will be dropping the base price below $50K.

2012 Honda Civic hatcback white EU version
There's Still Such A Thing
As A Civic Hatch, Just Not Here
For the first time since March and for just the second time this year, the Honda Civic was Canada's best-selling car in June 2013. The Civic ate into the Hyundai Elantra's narrow year-to-date lead, but only slightly. With the first half of 2013 complete, the Civic is only 305 sales back of the leading Hyundai.

Hyundai, of course, is wise enough to offer a hatchback version of the Elantra in Canada. Hatchbacks are also made available by the makers of June's fourth, sixth, ninth, 15th, and 16th-best-selling cars.

Hatchbacks form the exclusive bodystyle of the 17th and 20th-ranked cars, and there will even be a hatchback version of the 18th-ranked car, BMW's 3-Series. But when there's a 3-Series Touring alongside, the 3-Series GT will be silly.

Detroit nameplates produced four of Canada's 20 best-selling cars in June, down from seven in May. (South of the border, six of the 20 top-selling cars wore American badges.) There are two Volkswagens and one BMW on this list plus five Hyundais and Kias, leaving eight Japanese brands to fill in the gaps.

Canada's favourite midsize sedan is the Ford Fusion, and after a month in the number two spot, the Fusion grew its year-to-date lead over the Camry to 2096 units in June.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. GCBC has already published rankings for dozens of different brands and 20 top SUVs and 13 different trucks. This list showcases the 20 best-selling cars in Canada from June 2013.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition
Jeep sold a record number of Wranglers in June 2013 and its more expensive sibling, the Grand Cherokee, set a June record. They rank seventh and twelfth, respectively, on this list of the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in Canada.

Another all-time sales record were set by the Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Tiguan, and in its seventh month on sale, by the Chevrolet Trax.

But none of those vehicles ranked inside the top six. The Ford Escape, Canada's favourite utility vehicle, sold more than 4000 copies for the third consecutive month. The Ford Edge once again reported a strong June, traditionally its strongest Canadian sales month in a calendar year.

After a 25% year-over-year drop in May, Dodge Journey sales rose 5% in June. The Toyota RAV4 has added 4441 sales to Toyota Canada's total so far this year. Equinox volume increased for the first time in 2013. And the Honda CR-V, while not able to match last year's pace, is 33% ahead of 2011's half-year total.

Historical monthly and yearly sales figures for any of these models can always be accessed through the dropdown menu at GCBC's Sales Stats page, and for those not viewing the mobile version of this site, near the top right of this page, as well. GCBC has already published rankings for brands and 13 different trucks and will publish a list of the 20 best-selling cars in Canada momentarily.

This list displays the 20 best-selling SUVs and crossovers in the Canada in June 2013. A complete listing of all SUVs and crossovers should be out early next week.

Honda hasn't sold this many Pilots in any June since 2005. In fact, June 2013 marked just the fifth time in the last three-and-a-half years that American Honda sold more than 11,000 Pilots in a single month.

Ford has sold more than 15,000 Explorers in each of the last seven months and has posted 31 consecutive year-over-year increases.

Since June 2011, Nissan USA has reported year-over-year increases in Pathfinder volume in every month, and Pathfinder sales have tripled in 2013.

Sales of GM's three Lambda-platform utility vehicles totalled 131,627, up 10.7% from 118,892 in the first half of 2012. Those unsurprising gains, greater than the overall market's 7.5% improvement, come after refreshes of all three nameplates: Acadia, Enclave, Traverse.

Saturn sold its final seven Outlooks in December 2009.

The Chrysler Group has sold 109,101 copies of its Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee, up 13% from 96,563 in the first half of 2012.

* vehicle also displayed in another GCBC segment breakdown
GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Outback and Venza here but also with midsize cars, too, and the tweener-sized Sorento and Santa Fe are shown with midsize SUVs and small SUVs, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with smaller utilities and the Volkswagen Touareg with luxury SUVs... because readers have wanted it both ways. You can always find the sales results for EVERY vehicle and form your own competitive sets by using the All Vehicle Rankings posts.

June marked the first time in nine tries that U.S. sales of the fleet-only Chevrolet Captiva Sport fell on a year-over-year basis. Chevrolet hasn't reported a year-over-year decline in Equinox sales since December 2011. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport sales have risen in ten consecutive months.

June was the fifth consecutive month in which, year-over-year, Hyundai Tucson sales dropped and the 18th consecutive month in which sales of its partner, the Kia Sportage, dropped.

The Ford Escape continues to be America's best-selling utility vehicle, regardless of stature. Escape volume is up by 29,459 units in 2013. Sales of the next-best-selling Honda CR-V are down by 919 units this year. For the CR-V to end 2013 as America's favourite SUV or crossover, it would need to average monthly victories of 1811 units over the remainder of the calendar year.

While that's entirely possible, it seems unlikely given the Escape's upward trend. Keep in mind, with half of 2013 complete, General Motors has sold 177,073 copies of its Equinox and GMC Terrain twins, up from 157,492 at this time last year.

GCBC isn't here to break down segments, an impossible task for any group, but to display sales data for the sake of comparison. The more ways sales data can be displayed, the better, right? This explains why you'll see the Encore and XV Crosstrek are listed with small cars, too, and the tweener-sized Sorento and Santa Fe are shown with midsize SUVs and small SUVs, and the pricey FJ Cruiser and Xterra with midsizers, as well... because readers have wanted it both ways. The Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Mazda 6, Mitsubishi Galant, Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy, Suzuki Kizashi, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat combined for 213,250 U.S. sales in June 2013.

That's up 1.1% from 210,891 in June 2012. There were 1941 sales lost between the Mitsubishi Galant and Suzuki Kizashi. Automotive News says overall car sales were up 4.1% in June; the overall market rose 7.5%.

Through the first half of 2013, the Buick Regal and Chevrolet Malibu have reported the worst declines of any continuing midsize car. The biggest improvement belongs to the Honda Accord, sales of which rose 20% over the course of the first six months of 2013.

At this time last year, the Accord ranked third in the category, 58,725 sales back of the leading Toyota Camry. In 2013, the Accord is 20,766 sales behind the Toyota.

2014 Fiat 500L Verde Bosco Perla
Through the first half of 2013, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling small car in America, although its lead over the Honda Civic is small. That the Corolla achieved its 158,972-unit total with help from the Matrix is meaningful, but only as consequential as the fact that Honda also sold the Civic with two bodystyles: sedan and coupe.

The Corolla will be replaced in the coming months. It did not sell as often as the Civic in June 2013. Indeed, the Civic didn't sell as often as the Chevrolet Cruze, sales of which rose 73%, year-over-year.

America's favourite subcompact car in June 2013 was the Ford Fiesta, which outsold the Nissan Versa by 658 units. Year-to-date, the Versa is 18,856 sales ahead of the second-best-selling Chevrolet Sonic. Hyundai and Kia have sold 53,119 copies of their Accent/Rio fraternal twins in the last six months.

After 15 consecutive months of year-over-year growth, sales of the Fiat 500 dropped in June 2013. Brand-wide sales rose, albeit slightly, as Fiat introduced the dreadfully ill-proportioned 500L. At its six-month pace, Fiat will sell just under 45,000 copies of the 500 and quite clearly, an unknown number of 500Ls.

Despite the addition of 1001 extra sales via the Kia Cadenza and a car market which grew 7% in June, large cars didn't generate as many sales as they did at this time in 2012.

The segment's loss of 62 sales wouldn't mean much if it weren't for the fact that, as was already mentioned, car sales are rising, as is the overall market.

Nor would it be a problem if there weren't new Korean-badged products which should be helping to increase the segment's sway.

Instead, mainstream brand large cars, which accounted for 4.6% of the new vehicle market in June 2012, only made up 4.2% of the new vehicle market in June 2013. Last month, America's two best-selling cars accounted for 4.9% of the overall market.

Three-quarters of the category's volume was generated by Detroit brands. 757 of the Ford Taurus's sales came from the Police Interceptor sedan - non-police Taurus sales rose 5.9% in June.

GoodCarBadCar's founder and editor has already profiled the June 2013 and first-half U.S. sales results for large SUVs at The Truth About Cars

The highlights?

June was a wretched, downward-sloping month for all but one of these seven-truck-based SUVs, but sales did increase over the course of the first six months of 2013, thanks to big increases from the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon XL, the twin of the Tahoe's extended-wheelbase sibling.

These nameplates account for 1.5% of the new vehicles sold in America. GM's market share in the category in June was 70.7%. Six three-row crossover siblings of these seven utilities sell 2.8 times more often, not to mention all their competitors.
