| | | | | From heroes to zeros: Sales pace hits 4-year high in month of extremes U.S. auto sales got hot in September with a 13 percent gain that unexpectedly pushed the monthly selling pace higher than for any month since the industry's 2008 collapse. Sales totaled 1,188,899 light vehicles for the month, almost 100,000 more than most forecasters had expected. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate rose to 14.9 million. That's higher than the cash-for-clunkers 14. ... story | | | | | Winners and Losers % change in sales among major brands from Sept. 2012 | Winners | Sept. | | Winners | 9 mos. | | Losers | Sept. | | Losers | 9 mos. | 1 | Smart | 120% | | Fiat | 136% | | Mitsubishi | -17% | | Mitsubishi | -30% | 2 | Scion | 76% | | Smart | 95% | | Jaguar | -10% | | Cadillac | -9% | 3 | Fiat | 51% | | Chrysler division | 53% | | Mazda | -5% | | Suzuki | -6% | 4 | Acura | 44% | | Scion | 50% | | Suzuki | -5% | | Buick | -2% | 5 | Toyota division | 41% | | Volkswagen division | 37% | | Lincoln | -3% | | Lincoln | -2% | | | | Toyota sales jump 42% on car volume ![image](http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/storyimage/CA/20121002/RETAIL01/121009970/AR/0/AR-121009970.jpg&border=0&MaxW=150) | Camry sales have now topped nearly 315,000 units for the year -- more than Toyota sold in all of 2011.
| Rebounding Camry, Corolla and Prius sales enabled Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. to continue making up lost ground last month with a 42 percent sales gain over September 2011. Distancing itself from a 2011 waylaid by a series of production interruptions, Toyota Division posted a 41 percent sales increase for the month, and Lexus Division improved by 36 percent. Toyota Division sales, including Scion, totaled 151,524 cars and trucks in September, and Lexus reported sales of 20,386. "Our dealers got off to a great start over Labor Day weekend, and that momentum carried through the rest of the month," said Bill Fay, Toyota Division group vice president, adding that fleet sales accounted for just 5.6 percent of the volume. "Camry sales now total nearly 315,000 for the year, more than we sold in all of 2011," he said in a conference call today with reporters. "With gas prices hovering around $4 a gallon in many parts of the country, both Corolla and Prius are benefitting from buyers in search of improved fuel economy."
story GM ekes out a gain as cars rise, trucks fall DETROIT -- General Motors posted a 2 percent sales increase in September as rising car sales offset sliding demand for pickups and SUVs. Overall, GM sold 210,245 light vehicles last month. The Buick brand posted the strongest gain, 8 percent vs. a year earlier, followed by 2 percent for Chevrolet, flat results for GMC and a 1 percent decline for Cadillac. GM said its overall truck sales fell 20 percent, hurt by a big reduction in sales to fleet customers, which declined 46 percent. The company attributed the drop in fleet sales to a decline in truck deliveries to rental companies. Many rental customers ordered trucks in August, ahead of the changeover to the ... story Ford's flat September gets a lift from Focus With dealers building inventories of the redesigned 2013 Fusion, the Focus compact emerged as the sales star among Ford brand cars in September. Focus sales rose 91 percent over the previous September to 19,736. The Focus was the third-best selling vehicle in Ford's lineup behind the F-series pickup and Escape crossover. "With the depletion of the [2012] Fusion, people are going to the Focus," said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service, speaking to journalists and analysts today. The Fusion has outsold the Focus recently, but last month stocks of the 2012 Fusion were depleted and the automaker was still stocking the redesigned 2013 ... story BLOGS | JESSE SNYDER September: Cleared to ascend It seems silly to get picky about a U.S. auto sales year that is running 15 percent ahead of 2011. But here I am. Maybe the red-hot first quarter spoiled me, but 2012 has felt like it has been stuck in a rut since then. The seasonally adjusted annual selling rate, or SAAR, has been twitching between 13.9 million and 14.5 million from January through August. ...
