MAY U.S. AUTO SALES
Chrysler extends gains, Toyota soars 87% in May sales comeback
GM, Ford recover from April dips
David Phillips
Chrysler posted a 30 percent increase in sales last month while GM and Ford rebounded from April declines as the auto industry showed signs of a sharp recovery from weak results a year ago. Toyota said its sales rose 87 percent from a year earlier, when Japanese automakers began to reel from that country's March 2011 earthquake. U.S. auto sales for last month are forecast to climb about 30 percent from a year earlier, aided by rising incentives.
