U.S. sales soar as market drivers get 'better ... better ... better'
imageFebruary U.S. auto sales soared 16 percent over a strong year-ago period to the fastest selling rate in four years. The performance exceeded analysts' and automakers' forecasts. Sales of 1,149,432 light vehicles pushed February's seasonally adjusted annual selling rate to 15.1 million, well above January's 14.3 million SAAR and the highest since February 2008. ...

Chevy helps GM avoid another decline

GM sold 7,900 Chevy Sonics in February -- nearly triple the year-earlier sales of the car it replaced, the Aveo, and the highest mark since the car was launched in August.

DETROIT -- General Motors eked out a 1 percent sales increase in February, helped by strong demand from commercial buyers and recent launches such as the Chevrolet Sonic. The automaker's gain came almost entirely from Chevrolet.
GM officials said the result was better than they had anticipated given the incentive-lubricated rise they saw in February 2011, when the automaker's sales surged 46 percent.
Most analysts had predicted that GM's February sales would fall from year-earlier levels. Don Johnson, GM's vice president of U.S. sales, pointed to surprising strength in the economy and solid demand for newer models, many of which are smaller and fuel-efficient.

Toyota sales rise 12% as inventories recover
LOS ANGELES -- With inventories recovering from last year's earthquake, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. reported a 12 percent increase in February sales, reaching 159,423 vehicles.
Toyota Division jumped 11 percent, while Lexus Division surged 21 percent. It was the fourth straight monthly gain for the automaker following six losses, and the biggest since February 2011.
Among volume models, leading the way for Toyota were its recently redesigned Camry, with a 27 percent increase, and the Prius family, with a 52 percent jump. Toyota's hybrid-vehicle volume was up 63 percent, reflecting consumer sensitivity to rapidly increasing gasoline prices, said Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter.

Chrysler Group volume leaps 40% on car surge
DETROIT -- Chrysler Group extended its month-over-month sales-gain streak to 23 months in February, posting double- or triple-digit sales gains on every continuing model in its lineup.
The automaker's sales were up 40 percent in the United States to 133,521 units -- its strongest February since 2008 -- compared with 95,102 units last year.
The automaker was helped by the industry's highest vehicle incentives, the buzz generated from its two-minute "Halftime in America" Super Bowl spot and mild weather, dealers said.
Cars were the stars: Car sales more than doubled last month to 40,024 units.
