GM sales fall 6% on incentive hangover

(BLOOMBERG)

DETROIT -- General Motors' sales sank 6 percent in January, a hangover from a year earlier when GM pumped up sales by piling on incentives.
GM sold 167,962 vehicles last month, with the total propped up by fleet sales.
U.S. sales chief Don Johnson said GM expected a decline in sales after a "very strong" January in 2011.
He was pleased that GM's U.S. market share in January likely held steady at around 18.8 percent, which would match its share for 2011, according to the Automotive News Data Center.
"Although those year-over-year sales changes look a little bit challenging, sequentially, our share of the business is very good news," he said. "Importantly, we delivered this result with incentive spending that is very competitive."
GM's incentives as a percentage of its average transaction price per vehicle was a hair under 10 percent, Johnson said. That was down nearly 3 percentage points from January 2011.

Strong Camry launch propels Toyota sales up 7.5%
LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. posted a 7.5 percent sales increase in January, with the continued strong launch for the redesigned Camry propelling Toyota Division to a 9 percent gain.
Lexus sales fell slightly, affected by low inventory after the brand's December sales event.
"It's a very encouraging start to the year. The gradually improving economy will bring buyers back into the marketplace," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division general manager. "We're bullish with where the industry is going. Traffic at all our dealerships was pretty good."
The 56 percent gain for the Camry, was countered by a slow month for Toyota's No. 2 seller, the Corolla; sales fell ...

Honda posts first monthly sales increase since April
Strong sales of the CR-V crossover and Civic compact propelled American Honda Motor Co. to its first monthly U.S. sales increase since April.
Honda Division sold 74,628 vehicles last month, up 9 percent from January 2011. Acura Division gained 5 percent to 8,381 vehicles. Combined sales totaled 83,009 units, up 9 percent from January 2011.
Solid numbers for Honda Division's biggest volume vehicles were enough to offset sales declines for nearly every other nameplate in the Honda Division lineup.
Honda's redesigned CR-V had its best January, Honda said, with sales of 18,960 units, up 16 percent from last year. Civic sales increased 50 percent in January from last ...
