Keeping Your Electric Battery Clean Can Make Your Vehicle Safe

By Norman Vincent

Did you ever need to jump start your car only to discover that the battery was mired in glop? That gunk that spreads over the battery is corrosion formed by acid condensation. Fortunately, to get rid of the acid build-up, you just need to use a basic chemical solution. If you have baking soda at home, then you're going to be able to remove the battery acid. You'll want to take some safety measures, but safe cleaning of your battery is just following a few instructions.

First thing you'll want to do is to find the necessary supplies, which you may already have at home. You mainly need safety glasses for your eyes, baking soda, adjustable pliers and screwdrivers with insulated handles and a stiff-bristled brush. Some open-end and box wrenches, a plastic or metallic scraper, cleaning brushes for a battery terminal, and a turkey baster or perhaps a small funnel. You must also have a number of sponges, spray-type household cleaner, rubber gloves and a bucket of clean water. It might appear like a lot of stuff to clean the equipment, but it will keep it safe and non-hazardous.

Because the corroding deposits contain sulfuric acid, it is advisable to use rubber gloves and the safety glasses. You should be sure that the deposits do not get on the car since it will damage the paint. Contingent on how corroded the battery might be, the amount of cleaning that is needed will vary. In order to totally eliminate the dirt and corrosion, you will need to take the battery out of the vehicle. For the first cleaning, you utilize the scraper and the bristle brush to remove as much of the dirt and corrosion as you can.

The next phase would be to come up with a mixture of one tablespoon of baking soda to a pint of water, and take the turkey baster, and carefully apply the solution to the outside of the battery, along with the cable connections. After that you can use the bristle brush to loosen and remove the build up from the battery and you want to remove the cables so that cleaning will be easier. You can remove the cables, beginning with negative first then positive, using the pliers and wrenches. For additional components of the battery, use the brush to remove the deposits then purge with the baking soda solution.

Now apply the liquid cleaner in the spray bottle, and a sponge to get rid of the remaining dirt and grease. After, dry every one of the parts and reassemble everything and be sure you refasten the cable with positive first. Finally, be sure that everything is anchored and now you have a clean and safe battery.
