| DETROIT -- General Motors posted a 13 percent U.S. sales increase last year, to 2.5 million vehicles, gaining market share for the first time since 2002. The automaker boosted its U.S. market share by about a half of a percentage point, to an estimated 19.6 percent. (The figures are preliminary because Daimler AG and BMW AG have not yet released U.S. sales for December.) The last time GM increased its share of the U.S. market was in 2002, when its hugely successful "Keep America Rolling" promotion following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks helped increase its share to 28.6 percent from 28.3 percent in 2001. GM's sales gains for the year cooled toward the end of 2011, though. For December, the automaker's sales rose 5 percent, led by Chevrolet, while GM's other three brands posted year-over-year declines. Kia sales totaled 485,492 units in 2011, a 36 percent gain from 2010. December sales totaled 43,390 vehicles, up 43 percent from December 2010. Last month's 0.4 percent increase followed a 7 percent advance in November, when the automaker ended a six-month skid. On the brighter side, Toyota sold more vehicles last month than any in 2012. And executives say they are confident that strong first-quarter production will allow dealers to rebuild inventories and boost sales. For 2012, combined Toyota, Lexus and Scion sales in the United States will rise about 15 percent to 1.9 million units, said Jim Lentz, president ... story BLOGS | |
