In Search of Eco-Friendly Cars

By Robert R Taylor

The more we rely on fossil fuels, the more we are going to see our environment destroyed by its effects. If we look at autos, that is somewhere we can start to make changes. As a way to address the issue with fuel emissions, manufacturers are setting out to make more cars that won't cause damage to the environment.

The most environmentally friendly car, from the sizeable choice available, may well be the car that runs fully on battery. The fact that the vehicle is powered by battery means there is no need for diesel or gasoline. While this seems good from the point of view fuel savings and the effect on the environment, there are drawbacks. Despite the fact that they are already in the market, due to being a recent development, the car engines have restrictions. After running more or less 100 miles, you have to to stop and charge the battery again.

Buyers may likewise consider another sort of car, the hybrid. An eco friendly hybrid runs on battery and gasoline. You might be thinking, 'How does that work?' Well, I'll share it with you. It is the power generated by the battery that is utilized in the beginning by the hybrid car. The need for the gasoline comes when more power is called for at a a certain speed. The need to charge up the battery is eliminated as this is done as the gasoline is utilized.

One other choice is a vehicle called a plug-in hybrid car. Plug-in hybrid cars are also eco friendly and work similarly to the hybrid vehicles mentioned above. There is one difference and that is that plug-in hybrid vehicles have to be plugged into an external source of power to recharge the battery, whereas the standard hybrid car can automatically charge itself. Both hybrid vehicles are better than regular gas-powered vehicles, however.

Toyota has created a hybrid car, called the Prius, that does roughly 50 miles a gallon, which is very good. It is priced at more or less $22,000 and is nowadays one of the market leaders. Honda was actually the first to embark in the market with a hybrid referred to as Insight and Toyota followed shortly after that. Honda's hybrid was not welcomed in the same fashion as the Prius hybrid by Toyota but it opened the consumer market for hybrid vehicles. The Ford Fusion Hybrid, which costs around $27,000, has several awards to its name. It is recognized by many as the top hybrid car in the US. Mitsubishi has created the 'i-MiEV', which boasts of absolutely zero fuel emissions. Mitsubish became one of the firs automobile producers to make an electric car in Japan.

As technology further advances and the market grows we will see a lot more options for buyers in the hybrid and eco friendly car world.
